ABHS Alumnus Ashley Scott Receives Prestigious Teaching Fellowship
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has selected Ashley Scott from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock as a 2008 award recipient of the ASM Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship. Scott is a 2000 graduate of Arkansas Baptist High School.
This fellowship is aimed at highly motivated and competitive students who are interested in a career as an elementary or secondary school science teacher. Students will have the opportunity to develop a project to provide instruction in a scientific discipline in a local school or community setting in partnership with a mentor at their home institution and a teacher or site coordinator from the host site.
Each fellow receives a $2,500 stipend, a two-year ASM student membership, up to $500 for supplies and instructional materials. Awardees are also encouraged to submit abstracts and applications to attend the 2009 ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE).
This year, five applications were received and each applicant was awarded. Of the five awardees, two students were from research and doctoral institutions, three students were from masters’ and liberal arts institutions.
Olga Tarasenko from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is Ashley Scott’s faculty mentor, while Melissa Donham from Little Rock School District is the K-12 site mentor. The title of the project is: From educational to scientific perspectives: sugar polymers in microbiology.
The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the oldest and largest single biological membership organization, with over 40,000 members worldwide.
Congratulations to ABHS Alumnus Hannah Clardy on two great accomplishments
Hannah received the B. R. Chamberlain Foundation Outstanding SBACS Scholars Regional Scholarship award. To compete for the award, seniors must score at least a 1250 on the SAT or 28 on the ACT, have a 3.5 overall GPA, and have the testimony of their faculty to their good character, service and leadership within their school, church and community.
The purpose of the B. R. Chamberlain Foundation Outstanding SBACS Scholars Contest is to discover and recognize students in our Southern Baptist Christian schools across the nation with exemplary expertise and accomplishments in scholastics or music, Christian characters and service to others. The extraordinary level of achievement, character and leadership evidenced by this year’s participants demonstrates that our schools are producing outstanding results, young men and women of excellence who will be the salt and light that the Lord Jesus Christ expects and requires to lead His Kingdom. (from the SBACS Scholarship Contest Winners brochure)
Hannah has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award in recognition of her exceptional achievement on AP Exams. Hannah took six AP exams with an overall average of 3.83 and a grade of three or higher on five of her exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP exams.
